Link Building Basic Tips For The New Year

by Frank Pipolo on January 1, 2010

in Link Building

Happy New year all. What I love about SEO or SEM for that matter is that as strategies are always in constant change the basics are the same to good search engine optimization.  So what I like to do is revisit the basics and make sure I am still following the same way I do things that have provided results in the past.

Today I like to go back to link building basics as link building is the foundation for your organic search engine marketing and in my opinion will always be a big factor in that aspect of your search engine marketing.

  • Set up alerts – you do know both Yahoo and Bing provide news alerts right? Yes, Google alerts are always talked about and rightfully so but you are missing out on other link building opportunities if you don’t subscribe to these as well.  Again the key is to use these services to for great post/topic opportunities.
  • Stay diversified – this can take on different meanings. Make sure you link building efforts are done for internal pages (not just the home page), from lower authoritative web sites (as well as mid  to highly authoritative ones), and use different methods in building links such as online PR,  blog commenting, asking for links (yes, it can still work), under the radar link buys, and sponsorships that allow display their sponsors on their site.
  • Internal link building – links are not all about inbound links.  Make sure you have set up a matrix (I like to use a spreadsheet) that shows your internal link strategy.
  • Research you current inbound links- Use Yahoo Site Explorer to find all your inbound link partners and visit each site to see :
    • What the link text says – if it is not keyword enriched just send the webmaster/owner a friendly email asking for it to be changed. Majority of the time they will change it as they have already linked off to you.
    • Are they linking to an old page that is no longer available on your site? If so, make sure you create a page for that URL they are linking to so you can get the value of the link for your domain.
  • Have a reasonable expectation – let’s be honest link building can be a drag and is very unsuccessful the majority of the time.  Make sure you understand this and you do not get discouraged by all of the negativity.

Have fun, stick to the plan, and make 2010 the best you can be.
