DotProject – My Overview

Back at newhomes.com we used dotproject for our project management and task management software. Overall I think it is a real decent task management tool but like all tools of this nature it has a “garbage in garbage out” mentality.

DotProject – Some History

dotProject was originally developed by dotMarketing Inc. to be an open source replacement killer Microsoft Project, having a very similar user interface, but extending to include project management functionality. Begun in 2000 the project was moved from dotmarketing.org to Sourceforge in October 2001.

The project stalled in late 2002 with the administrator not being contactable. Some of the more active developers he moved on to Mambo and subsequently Joomla.

Why I like DotProject as a Project Management Tool

  • Ability to attack files to tasks and projects, and not just notes like other tools.
  • Access to budgets as well as a decent employee database system.
  • The program is Open Source and that means free, all you need to pay for is the hosting, and you’re up and ready to go.
  • dotProject provides more than just project management solutions, it also sets up a help desk, with trouble tickets.
  • Manage several companies at once.

What Could Be Done Better?

  • Time logging module. This is a common feature on most other tools but to be fair to the tool it was intended for smaller companies, to increase efficiency and therefore productivity, and not just to bill clients.
