Link Building: How Google Treats Anchor Text

by Frank Pipolo on April 13, 2010

in Link Building

A post on SEOMOZ by Spanish SEO Errioxa, could be a good way in which Google really handles anchor text.  Generally, Google treats anchor text within the ahref as:

< a href=http://www.frankpipolo.com/123.html/>SEO</a>

Errioxa’s post with the test he has confirmed that if you use link anchors shown below may credit the unique anchor text for each link. This is what the link would look like:

<a href=http://www.frankpipolo.com/123.html#SEO>SEO</a>

So if you have a page on your site you are trying to get link association to for the terms “TaylorMade Clubs and Balls” you were stuck to make the anchor text say “TaylorMade Clubs and Balls”.  Google would then only give you credit to the first link it had discovered on the page and ignore the others.  This made you design two different pages for each product or face the fact that you got only the one link from that page

Errioxa’s post showed that you can get two links to your TaylorMade Clubs and Balls page by doing the following:

<a href=”http://www.frankpipolo.com/taylormadeclubsandballs.html”>Taylormade Clubs and Balls</a>

<a href=”http://www.frankpipolo.com/taylormadeclubsandballs.html#taylormade clubs”>Taylormade Clubs </a>

<a href=”http://www.frankpipolo.com/taylormadeclubsandballs.html#taylormadeballs”>Taylormade Balls</a>

Google would ignore the first link but give you credit for link 2 &3. So the “secret” is that Google may like the internal anchor more.  Internal anchors are usually found in search result site links. These are the type of links we have all see before when you click on them they move you down the page to a specific section instead of take you to a totally new page. Remember, the idea is about relevancy in the eyes of the search engines.  That’s a benefit to their users, but for site owners, this may be a way to help get more unique anchor text attributed to your page that focuses on multiple topics.

My suggestion would be to try this out on your site and see how it works for you.  Some are suggesting that this will give you the ability to control your Google site links better that will help your conversion rate should as visitors can get to your content much quicker via the search engine results.
