Gettting a top 10 position with your hard work in search engine optimization is a great accomplishment that you should be proud of no matter what the return is to you and your site. But does your SEO going to pay off? Take a look at the search results below and I will explain:

One thing that is certain is that the search results for Google’s page one have been changing and include more and more listings from various locations including YouTube, Local Search, Google Merchant, News Results and of course your regular Paid Listings. Now this doesn’t include any local listings because of the search term chosen but you can see the point regardless as so much of the above the fold real estate has been taken over.

This is why it is so crucial for you to know HOW to promote your site, service, and products in all of the page one results! Yes page one SEO results will still pay great dividends for you but is is no longer the silver bullet once enjoyed by us SEO consultants.  You need to able top optimize for the following:

  • Google Merchant
  • Video Optimization
  • Adwords Optimization
  • Social Media
  • On-Page Optimization
  • Google News

Don’t worry as we are going to address these optimizations in the days to come.

Frank you are right on. I have made it to the top 10 of many key words for my webstore, http://www.YellowBearShop.com, but it remains to be seen the profit return. It is a slow and sometimes painful process but some days Google Webmaster is truly my friend when it shows improvement. It is frustrating as a children’s retailer when I am in the top 10 but then the manufacturer discontinues the product. That hurts! I have also noticed that Google Shopping likes to pick the big retailers (Amazon or WalMart for example) before the smaller shops. But baby steps and sticking to the basics will eventually pay off.

Julie,

Congrats on making it to the top 10! It is still a great accomplishment and you should feel really good about that. Unfortunately, top 10 results does not equal traffic anymore like it used to. Universal search and personalization of organic results makes it even more difficult to reap the benefits of top 10 results. SEO is just a part of Internet marketing that Internet businesses need to perform. Stay tuned as I will discuss more about other Internet marketing strategies that will complement your top 10 placement!
