Getting listed in DMOZ is nearly impossible but it can be done if you set yourself up correctly before you submit. Here are some of my tips for getting listed in DMOZ.
I can tell you from experience this directory has to be the most corrupt directory out on the web. I can tell you this as at one time I was the editor (jakelador) of the Florida real estate section and I personally would not let my competitors in the directory yet I had tons of my sites in and knew other editors who did the same. I say this not so I can go to my grave in peace but to let you know that no matter what you do sometimes you are going to face an editor that just will not let your site in.
So how do you get in? First thing I do is find categories that have editors in them. Reason being if you submit to a category that has no editor these submission will move up stream to the next highest level editor and you can imagine how many submissions are on their plate. Getting accepted is much tougher without an editor in the category your submitting to.
Next is to go local. Local categories have less listings and thus it is easier to get listed. Better yet find a category that has no listings. This will give you a better chance to be listed as your listing helps build out the directory.
If you find a local category that has no editor apply for it. The majority of editors started in small local categories and it is the best best way to become an editor. When applying to be an editor do not use your site as one of the sites you suggest. If you do you won’t get in as an editor.
So you found a local category with an editor in it. This is no easy feat! So you should be in within a few days you think? Nope. It can take months but do not resubmit your request before 3 months each time you submit it removes the last request and thus you request moves to the bottom of the pile.
Just remember that DMOZ is a link and only that. You can rank high in the SE’s without having a DMOZ listings but it does not hurt to get one.
